Cashback at Walmart

Walmart is the hardest of the megastore chains to earn portal cashback on — the company runs its own advertising and rarely gives affiliate portals more than 1%. But the stack still works: Ibotta pays direct-to-consumer offers on Walmart groceries, Walmart+ members get 5¢/gallon gas discounts and free Paramount+, and warehouse clubs sell Walmart gift cards at a small discount. Layered together, a Walmart run can quietly return 5–8%.

Best credit card

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard is the only card that hits 5% at Walmart — but only when you check out with Walmart Pay in the app. In-store swipes are just 2%. If you don't use Walmart Pay, a flat-2% card matches the base rate with no ecosystem lock-in.

Gift card play

Walmart gift cards rarely discount more than 1–2% on secondary markets — they're too liquid. The better play is buying them at grocery stores running fuel-point promotions (Kroger's 4x fuel points on third-party gift cards effectively returns 4–8% depending on your gas usage).

Watch out

Portal rates on Walmart are volatile and frequently drop to zero on grocery, pharmacy, and electronics categories — the exact categories most people are shopping. Always confirm the live rate before you click through, and don't build a strategy around Walmart portal cashback alone.

The verdict

Walmart is a stacking play, not a portal play. Combine Walmart Pay + the Capital One Walmart card + Ibotta offers and you'll clear 5% consistently — the portal itself is a bonus, not the foundation.
